Research Institute for Reproduction, Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer "Temerin" is occupied with:

  • scientific research work in area of bovine reproduction and genetics,

  • and transfer of scientific knowledge in aim to improve genetical basis of cattle raising throw genetically valuable sires in population of dairy cattle, combined and beef cattle.

  • Besides scientific research work the Institute raise high quality bulls (Top Ten bulls)

  • and produce semen and embryos for needs of artificial insemination of cows and heifers.

In aim to successfully work out mentioned tasks, the Institute disposes with specialized and scientific research experts and the most modern buildings and equipment is in use.

The Institute was founded as a centre for artificial insemination of domestic animals in Novi Sad in 1953. Their task was to increase the amount of artificial insemination in the cow population in Vojvodina.

The capacities of this former Institute could no longer come up to their requirements. So, with the help of the Cattle Breeding Association and the Executive of the Parliament of Vojvodina, they began to build a new Centre with a capacity of 20 bulls and the exploitation of 15 bulls, located at "Sajlovo" in Novi Sad. In 1964 they merged with the Bacteriological Institute and founded the Veterinary Institute, Novi Sad.

During the following period it came to the discovery of new methods in artificial insemination and they also advanced on the field of genetic foundations of cattle breeding. They introduced the insemination of cows with deep frozen semen, which enables them to use up-to date methods concerning the evaluation of breeding performance of bulls. In this way, a higher genetic advance is ensured and new possibilities for wider exploitation of "top" bulls in the cow population have been opened up. The Centre experienced an expansion, both concerning the development of skilled practical work and to an exceeding extent in the direction of research work, where they have ever more established themselves on the field of elimination of cow sterility. They founded a laboratory for controlling the quality of cattle feeding stuffs, as well as a micro biological laboratory, which plays an important role in the discovery of causes for cow sterility. In 1964 the Centre joins the Agricultural Faculty of University Novi Sad.

Extraordinary results have been achieved in the elimination of cows sterility and the increase of milk production per cow in the cow population of Vojvodina, with the Centre playing one of the key roles. They have organized an own bulls production and tested productions parameters. They have participated actively in all up-to date developments in the creation of specialized cattle genotypes for a high milk productivity. The hybridization in meat production has been a further point of issue. Coping with new method on the fields of sterility diminution and providing the farms with feed for highly productive cows have been also aimed at. In the course of the last 15 years all these above mentioned issues together with new techniques in the production and primary processing of feed, embryo transfer and different other factors have facilitated in cooperation with several qualified farms and some further institutions the increase of milk production per average cow from then 3.500 kg up to 6.500 kg milk today.

Such results and the requirements of modern life with their further progress have practically created the need of introducing a program for the development of the genetic foundation of cattle breeding in Vojvodina. As a first condition for the fulfillment of this program a new centre for reproduction had to be built, which could satisfy the most up-to date requirements of further breeding tasks: it had to show for itself the newest methods for the development of the basic population, for the development of trends in genetic progress, to make perfect the feeding technology in order to obtain a high amount of milk. They also had to guarantee the reproduction at 80% under these conditions and to facilitate a faster spread of cows with a genetically high value.

The new Centre was opened in 1989 and has since then worked independently as the
