Its name consists of two words - NOVI (NEW) and SAD (FIELD) which by themselves already indicate an eternally new plantation of human creativity. It is a city of rapid changes, both in the eyes of its guests and its citizens. |

HISTORICAL SIGHTS

PETROVARADIN FORTRESS The fortress also known as "The Danube Gibraltar" built from 1692 to 1780 on the cite of Medieval Hungarian - Turkish fortification. The most modern plans of the famous French architect, marquis Sebastian Voban, of that time, were used for building this fortress. Planners were Marsili, Kaisersfeld, Schreder and Vanberg, who was burried there. It is an area of 112 acres, three levels in the depth, and about twelve miles of different corridors. The main defense consisted of four hundred cannons and twelve thousand loopholes. The perfection of this fortification was confirmed by a famous victory of Eugen de Savoy in 1716, who defended the fortress with only seventy thousand soldiers from the Turkish army of Dakar Ail Pasha, who attacked with two hundred thousand soldiers. |

THE TOWER CLOCK In order to see the time from greater distance, the small watch hand shows the minutes and the big one shows the hours. Originates from the XVIII century, when the old smaller one was replaced. The same clock mechanism remained the diameter of clock circles is two meters. |

CITY HALL The old City Hall is one of the most important and magnificent buildings in Novi Sad. Both, the building and the Catholic church, which is at the opposite side of the aquare, were planned by Georg Molnar. It was built in 1895 in neorenaissance style. Trg Slobode. |

THE CHURCH OF ST. NICHOLAS The oldest Orthodox church built before 1730, dedicated to the moving of St. Nicholas's relics to Bari. Bombed in 1849, when it lost its former interior decoration. Iconostasis was painted by Pavle Simic in 1862. In 1913, in this church, sons of Milena and Albert Einstain, Albert and Edward were christened on the day of The Nativity of the Virgin Mary. THE DORMITION OF THE VIRGIN MARY CHURCH There is a testimony on existence of the church in 1731. The temple of that time was made of sticks, mud and straw. The construction of the present church began around 1765. The particular beauty of this temple makes its iconostasis with its carving of The Virgin Mary's Throne, the archpriest's throne and church furniture of the rare beauty, done by the domestic wood-carvers Marko Gavrilovic and his sons. The iconostasis was done by Janko Halkozovic and Vasilije Ostojic. The icons on the north and south doorway are very different, together with the icons on the archpriest's throne, so it is believed that they were painted either by Dimitrije Bratoglic from Zemun or Mihajlo Jeftic from Sremski Karlovci. After the installing the bells, theiconostasis and some other minor works this church probably acquired is present appearance. Prominent people were buried in the churchyard. It is located next to The Serbian National Theatre. |

THE ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL CHURCH OF ST. GEORGE The Cathedral church of Novi Sad is dedicated to the Holy Great Martyr George. It was built in baroque style in 1734, during the time of the empress Maria Theresia the patriarch Arsenije IV Jovanovic and the archpriest Visarion Pavlovic. It burnt down during the bombing in 1849. It was rebuilt in 1860-80, and the last reconstruction took place in 1905 thanking to archpriest Mitrofan Sevic, after the project of Mihajl Harminc, the architect from Budapest. New tower with new bells from Budapest was built as well. Twenty-six icons on the iconostasis, two historical paintings above the choir-stalls and the two great icons (on the Godmother's and the archpriest's thrones were made in 1905 by Serbian academic painter Paja Jovanovic, who also supervised the wall decorating. The window vitrages were made by Imre Zseler in Budapest after the drawings of Paja Jovanovic. The wall paintings were made by Stevan Aleksic. Pasiceva street. |

THE THREE SAINT BISHOPS CHURCH Serbs who settled to the periphery of the former Petrovaradin Trench after they moved from the village Almas, in 1718, built this church. Made of sticks it could not have lasted long, so on the same place the new larger one was built. The archpriest Visarion Pavlovic dedicated it in January 1733. In 1797 they built a new one. It is the biggest Orthodox church in Novi Sad. It has acquired its present look at the end of the XVIII century, when it was renovated for the last time in the early classicism style. Wood carving was done by Aksentije Markovic, the iconostasis and wall paintings by Arsenije Teodorovic, the famous painter, who was buried in the churchyard. In 1905 Uros Predic painted the icon of the Virgin Mary on the throne. Almaska street. |

THE ROMAN CATHOLIC VIRGIN MARY PARISH CHURCH Built in 1895 according to the plan of the architec Georg Molnar, in neogothic style. It was built on the very same place of the old XIII century church. Trg Slobode. |

THE SNOWY VIRGIN MARY CHURCH It was built as a commemoration to the victory of Austrian army in the battle against the Turkish army in 1716. Formerly on the same place there was a small chapel without a steeple, which was demolished by the Turks during the XVI century, and on the same place they built a wooden mosque with minaret and residence for dervishes. So they called it Tekija, which in Arabic means resting place. In 1687, friars changed it into Christian, Catholic church. Present church was build in 1881, with two Gothic steeples, with three altars in three Christian variants, Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant. On the back dome there are both, cross and half-moon. SYNAGOGUE Bilt in 1906 according to the plan and project of the architect Lipot Baumhorn, in the style of Hungarian secession. For its extreme acoustics, it is used nowadays as a concert hall. The building is not used for religious rites. 11 Jevrejska street. |
| FRUSKA GORA Fruska Gora (Crveni Cot - 538 m) mountain is situated only few miles from Novi Sad, protecting it and providing fresh and clean air. 15 Serbian orthodox monasteries, which remained of 35 built in this area during the 16th century, are scattered, in this 50 km long and 10 km widespace. |
